If you’re looking for a new way to teach recorders in your elementary music room that allows you to give more personalized feedback, hold students accountable, and cover a variety of concepts, consider creating a self-paced recorder unit! When you create a self-paced recorder unit, you create a unit that is tailored to your specific students to ensure that they are learning exactly what you need them to in a way that is fun and fast-paced for everyone. Your students and administrators will love that self-paced lessons allow students to truly master the concepts. You’ll love that you can still cover a variety of topics while listening to students and giving them personalized feedback! Plus, when you’re finished putting the unit together, you’re done planning for the duration of the unit!

In this workshop, you will:

  • Plan out what songs students will play, what concepts you want to cover, and what activities would best be suited for each concept
  • Create the activities and student workbook using the provided templates to make the creation process even easier
  • Teach the unit to your students, learning from the mistakes I made to make your lessons run even more smoothly
  • Reflect on your unit and make minor adjustments to make it even better next time

Could you create a self-paced recorder unit on your own as I did? Sure, but it took a lot of trial and error. I wasted a lot of time figuring it out on my own. Instead, let me guide you through the process.  Use the templates I’ve already made for you so you can save your precious time!

Professional Practice Goal

Elementary music teachers will prepare a self-paced hybrid unit that allows them to cover a variety of concepts and give personalized feedback while students take ownership of their learning and achieve a higher rate of mastery.

About the Instructor

I’m Jamie, from Caffeinated J. I’m an elementary music teacher, but also a wife and mom that runs on coffee. I’m busy, and I know you are too. That’s why I love to create resources and lesson ideas for your classroom! I want to save you time and energy so you can spend it on the things that matter most to you. In my ten years of teaching, I’ve taught a wide variety of grade levels and abilities. Early in my career, I taught Kindergarten through eighth grade in an urban district. I currently teach developmental preschool through fifth grade as well as fifth-grade band. In addition to beginning band, I have also taught choir, theater, and started a ukulele club.

I live in Indiana with my husband, daughter, and beagle named Leonard Beaglestein. In my spare time, I enjoy reading fiction and playing the piano and French horn. I love connecting with other music teachers and talking about lesson ideas, funny kid stories, books, and favorite types of coffee or tea!
