Elementary art teachers… do you love the idea of using centers in your classroom but don’t know where to start? Make this the year you diversify your instruction through centers in your art room. You don’t have to uproot your entire teaching philosophy- use your existing lessons and learn how to balance centers alongside teacher-directed instruction in a way that works for you and your students.
Elementary art teachers will explore, design, and implement learning centers in the art room to increase student choice and engagement while decreasing overwhelm. The comprehensive Centered Art Room Framework will guide you through this meaningful process that gives you the tools you need for designing your own lessons with centers for years to come.
My name is Jess Karr. I’m an elementary art teacher and art education advocate. My first experience with centers in the art room was somewhat by accident. As part of a lesson, I set-up stations around my room where students discovered different ways artists find inspiration. Over 4 periods, students rotated through 4 centers under my direction. It was the perfect balance of creativity with constraints. I was able to demonstrate the learning goal in a comprehensive way that allowed students to explore authentic ideas. I was able to work with small groups that allowed me to better serve my students. There was so much to love. After the success of that lesson, I knew I had to explore centers more. Over the last 4 years, I’ve discovered many ways centers can be used to enrich the art curriculum.
I love the idea of TAB but found it isn’t a good fit for me. Centers have allowed me to add more student choice and play while still teaching my tried and true lessons. I’m not talking about free choice centers for early finishers. My framework shows you how to infuse choice and play that support your existing lessons. I can’t wait to show you how!
